Obituary of Ronald Slock

Ronald Slock formerly of Aubigny, passed away March 30, 2024 at the Actionmaguerite St. Boniface at the age of 84 years. Ronald was predeceased by parents Roy and Olive Slock and brother Daniel. He is survived by half brother Barry Riel, nieces, nephews and special friends Helene and Tyson. A funeral service will be held Saturday, April 13, 2024 at 2:00pm at the Morris United Church. Burial of the urn will take place at the Morris Cemetery. Donations in memory of Ronald may be made to the Actionmaguerite Foundation. Ronald (Ron) was born September 1, 1939 to Rheinhold (Roy) and Olive Slock. Due to circumstances, both he and his younger brother Danny were raised by their grandparents, Adolf and Pauline Slock and an uncle Leo Slock on a mixed farm just east of Aubigny. While growing up he enjoyed tinkering with machinery and became very good at understanding how they worked and how to repair them. This would eventually lead him to his future career as a heavy equipment mechanic for a construction company in Winnipeg. To his employer, Ron was a reliable, hard-working man he could count to get the repair job done, without any supervision. Whether it was -30C , or on a weekend or 100 miles away, he never let them down. Even though Ron was working in the city he would come home evenings and weekends to help Leo on the farm especially during seeding, haying and harvesting. He enjoyed the home cooked meals and the family gatherings when the aunts and uncles would come to help celebrate holidays. It was hours of card games, laughing and lots of delicious food. When the farm house had a fire in the early 80's, Leo decided because of his age it was time to sell the farm and moved to Winnipeg. Since both were bachelors, Ron moved in with Leo to keep him company and to help out. The family gatherings (although much smaller at this time) continued at Leo's place until his passing in 1994 Ron had a big heart and enjoyed helping people. When he was retired, he helped his aunt Ella Roy with her garden work and took her grocery shopping after she stopped driving. He liked getting out of the city and would go to Aubigny and help Paul and Dianne with the yard work. He enjoyed being on the garden tractor either mowing, tilling or cleaning up stuff It was during this time in his life that he met Leonard who became a good friend and roommate. Leonard didn't mind being a food taster when Ron was trying out new recipes When Leonard began to have health issues, Ron was there to drive him to medical appointments, shopping, etc. They enjoyed each others company. Also two other people became involved at the same time, Helene and her grandson Tyson. They became special friends and when Helene bought a rental house, Ron and Leonard rented the upper level suite. Life was good for a few years until April 6, 2015 when Ron suffered a severe stroke that left the left side of his body paralyzed. The stroke was devastating for him because he no longer had his mobility and his freedom. He entered the Actiomarguerite, St Boniface in August of 2015 and remained there till his passing on March 30,2024. Ron didn't have much of an education, was a little rough around the edges and the burn scar on his face turned some people off. However those of us who had the chance to share our lives with him, never noticed these things. He was a kind-hearted soul whose life journey has come an end and he is no longer in pain. Rest in peace dear friend, you will be missed.
